What happens when I have made an appointment?

I work from my own photographs and the cost of your portrait includes my visit to you. There is no extra cost for including more than one horse, or a selection of studies of your horse in one picture, however this is only a feasible option when ordering a larger size.

You need to think about the time of year that I take the photographs: some horses look fabulous all year round, but some breeds and colours have considerable seasonal variability and winter coats can be substantially darker than in summer (and can sometimes look a bit tired by February).
I generally create a neutral background for the portrait that does not distract the eye from the subject, so you do not need to provide attractive surroundings for me to photograph. A slightly overcast day rather than bright sunlight is ideal as this produces softer shadows, so access to a shaded area is useful in summer.

How long will it take?

I take around 15 to 20 hours over a period of 3 to 4 weeks to complete a picture depending on complexity, and framing usually takes around 10 days (longer at peak times, e.g. before Christmas). So if you need a portrait for a specific date then please allow at least 6 to 8 weeks from the date of my visit to you and give me as much notice as possible so that I can book you into my work schedule.

Pastels need to be professionally framed, as it is important that the picture surface is not in direct contact with the glass surface. I use bevelled window mounts and these can be chosen in colour combinations to complement the frame and picture.

Pets

I have been asked if I can also create portraits of cats and dogs and, yes I am more than happy to do this. Please see my gallery for some examples.
